Takuman é uma liderança cultural Kamayurá, da Aldeia Ipavu (Alto Xingu, MT) — uma das quatro aldeias Kamayurá dentro do Território Indígena do Xingu (TIX). Recebeu o nome do avô, o lendário Takuman, um dos líderes mais respeitados da história do Xingu, filho de Kutamapy, também um guerreiro e liderança de destaque.
Takuman is a Kamayurá cultural leader from Ipavu Village (Upper Xingu, Mato Grosso) — one of the four Kamayurá villages within the Xingu Indigenous Territory (TIX). He was named after his grandfather, the legendary Takuman, one of the most respected leaders in the history of the Xingu, son of Kutamapy, also a warrior and prominent leader.
É filho do Grande Chefe Kotok, líder Kamayurá falecido em 2023 e retratado pelo fotógrafo Sebastião Salgado. Em 2024, seguindo a estrutura hereditária Kamayurá, o irmão mais velho de Takuman, Mayaru, tornou-se o novo Cacique. Takuman seguiu outro caminho de liderança — não político, mas de salvaguarda cultural.
He is the son of Great Chief Kotok, a Kamayurá leader who passed away in 2023 and was photographed by Sebastião Salgado. In 2024, following the Kamayurá hereditary structure, Takuman's older brother, Mayaru, became the new Chief. Takuman followed a different path of leadership — not political, but one of cultural safeguarding.

Quis estudar português, geografia, ciências, história e direito para representar seu povo além dos limites da aldeia. Ainda adolescente, saiu do Território Indígena do Xingu para tentar estudar em Canarana (MT).
He wanted to study Portuguese, geography, science, history and law to represent his people beyond the boundaries of the village. Still a teenager, he left the Xingu Indigenous Territory to try to study in Canarana (Mato Grosso).
Viveu com poucos recursos, na casa de um parente, sem apoio financeiro. Em suas palavras: "Na cidade, se você não tem dinheiro, não tem nada. Eu não tinha nem um chinelo. Não tinha comida, nem roupa decente. Percebi que não conseguiria sobreviver ali."
He lived with few resources, in a relative's house, with no financial support. In his own words: "In the city, if you don't have money, you have nothing. I didn't even have flip-flops. I had no food, no decent clothes. I realized I wouldn't be able to survive there."
De volta à aldeia, decidiu se dedicar à disciplina do huka-huka — a luta tradicional do Kuarup praticada pelos povos do Xingu. Anos de treino o firmaram como lutador de huka-huka, conquistando respeito e distinção social — reconhecimento de força física, disciplina, caráter e compromisso com a tradição. Ele faz questão da distinção: campeão, entre os Kamayurá, é quem vence todos os anos — e não é assim que ele se descreve.
Back in the village, he decided to dedicate himself to the discipline of huka-huka — the traditional Kuarup wrestling practiced by the Xingu peoples. Years of training established him as a huka-huka wrestler, earning respect and social distinction — recognition of physical strength, discipline, character and commitment to tradition. He is specific about the distinction: among the Kamayurá, a champion is someone who wins every year — and that is not how he describes himself.
Há mais de 20 anos, ao lado do pai, o Grande Chefe Kotok, já trabalhava documentando e protegendo os grafismos Kamayurá — preocupação que ia além do desenho em si, envolvendo a proteção de todo um patrimônio imaterial ligado a identidade, história, espiritualidade e saberes ancestrais.
For more than 20 years, alongside his father, Great Chief Kotok, he had already been documenting and protecting Kamayurá graphic patterns — a concern that went beyond the drawing itself, involving the protection of an entire intangible heritage linked to identity, history, spirituality and ancestral knowledge.

Na sociedade Kamayurá, as mulheres são as principais guardiãs da língua, dos grafismos sagrados, do trançado e de boa parte das tradições transmitidas entre gerações — mas muitas não falam português, o que cria barreiras no contato com instituições, pesquisadores e fóruns públicos.
In Kamayurá society, women are the main guardians of the language, the sacred graphic patterns, weaving and much of the traditions passed down between generations — but many do not speak Portuguese, which creates barriers in contact with institutions, researchers and public forums.
Reconhecido e eleito pelas mulheres detentoras de conhecimento de sua comunidade para acompanhá-las em intercâmbios culturais, reuniões institucionais e ações de advocacy fora da aldeia.
Recognized and chosen by the women knowledge holders of his community to accompany them in cultural exchanges, institutional meetings and advocacy efforts outside the village.
Seu papel evoluiu para o de porta-voz dedicado à salvaguarda do patrimônio Kamayurá — hoje é a principal fonte de registro dos grafismos masculinos e de rituais como o huka-huka.
His role has evolved into that of a spokesperson dedicated to safeguarding Kamayurá heritage — today he is the main source for recording male graphic patterns and rituals such as huka-huka.

Em 2026, Marta DeVito (Ecoarts Amazônia, membro nº 11784 do The Explorers Club) indicou Takuman ao "Explorer Club 50" — reconhecimento do clube — e escreveu um paper biográfico de 8 páginas a pedido do clube, já que não havia nenhum material publicado sobre ele até então.
In 2026, Marta DeVito (Ecoarts Amazônia, member no. 11784 of The Explorers Club) nominated Takuman for the "Explorer Club 50" — a club recognition — and wrote an 8-page biographical paper at the club's request, since no published material about him existed until then.
